Catching fish while sailing

"Most people's thoughts go to powerboats when thinking fishing. It's possible that only an inflatable pool toy is a worse platform for catching fish than a sailboat. But for centuries, the sailboat was the only seagoing boat that could get you to where the fish were. So it must be possible.

Last summer, I had the opportunity to have a master show me how to catch fish while under sail. It boiled down to a few easy tricks of rigging, sailing,"

More from the San Juan Islands!

Welcome to Lopez Island, the first ferry stop from Anacortes aboard the Washington State Ferries. Sailing time is approximately 45 minutes so enjoy the ride as you wander past some of the smaller islands that make up this archipelago comprised of 175 named islands. And keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles, seals, otters and the occasional orca whale.

You can also fly to Lopez on daily scheduled flights from Sea-Tac Airport or seaplane from Lake Union in downtown Seattle. Water taxi service is also available from Anacortes. Boaters coming to the Island will find protected moorage at two marinas in Fisherman Bay, within ½ mile walking distance to Lopez Village. Both marinas offer a variety of amenities including restrooms and picnic areas. Bike and kayak rentals are also nearby. Boaters can also find public mooring buoys at Spencer Spit State Park and Odlin County Park. Public launch ramps are available at Odlin County Park, MacKaye Harbor and Hunter Bay.

Lopez is the most rural of the three major islands, covering 29.5 square miles. The landscape blends woods with rolling farmlands and open spaces with shimmering vistas. It is also known as the friendliest of the San Juan Islands. Don’t forget to wave to passing motorists – a local custom for many years! There’s a genuine spirit of community here and a special feeling for life that pervades the population of 2,200. Lopez is home to many artist, craftspeople, musicians, farmers, fisherman, nature lovers, and eccentrics. Lopez School serves approximately 265 children, kindergarten through grade 12.

A Western Heart: The flow of "Boat people" has resumed

"Indonesian and Australian police have stopped 14 boats laden with asylum seekers from travelling to Australia this year, including at least three in the past six weeks, as people-smuggling activity accelerates across the archipelago. Four boats have made it to Australian waters. On Thursday, one of them, with 12 Sri Lankans aboard, became the first boat in two years to reach the mainland, near Shark Bay in Western Australia. Government sources said the arrivals, who were being transferred to Christmas Island, would have access to Australian law should they claim asylum."
