Welcome to Lopez Island, the first ferry stop from Anacortes aboard the Washington State Ferries. Sailing time is approximately 45 minutes so enjoy the ride as you wander past some of the smaller islands that make up this archipelago comprised of 175 named islands. And keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles, seals, otters and the occasional orca whale.
You can also fly to Lopez on daily scheduled flights from Sea-Tac Airport or seaplane from Lake Union in downtown Seattle. Water taxi service is also available from Anacortes. Boaters coming to the Island will find protected moorage at two marinas in Fisherman Bay, within ½ mile walking distance to Lopez Village. Both marinas offer a variety of amenities including restrooms and picnic areas. Bike and kayak rentals are also nearby. Boaters can also find public mooring buoys at Spencer Spit State Park and Odlin County Park. Public launch ramps are available at Odlin County Park, MacKaye Harbor and Hunter Bay.
Lopez is the most rural of the three major islands, covering 29.5 square miles. The landscape blends woods with rolling farmlands and open spaces with shimmering vistas. It is also known as the friendliest of the San Juan Islands. Don’t forget to wave to passing motorists – a local custom for many years! There’s a genuine spirit of community here and a special feeling for life that pervades the population of 2,200. Lopez is home to many artist, craftspeople, musicians, farmers, fisherman, nature lovers, and eccentrics. Lopez School serves approximately 265 children, kindergarten through grade 12.
